Videos were fine and learning was OK, however getting the statement of accomplishment was very difficult. It depended heavely on peer assesments that were in many cases not accurate and peers did not follow the course guideliness

I am a part time professor and a consultant who is familiar with the concepts and found Dr. Ariely's course to be outstanding. He explains concepts and provides insights in an understandable and fun way. as someone who works and trains internationally it is , as someone who criticized the course taught in a way geared to American /western students. That will be a MOOC issue in many non-technical courses. However, I thought the course was one of the best MOOCs I have experienced.

This is one of the most intellectually-gratifying, emotionally-fascinating courses I have ever taken. It was a pure joy from Day 1. I couldn't stop raving about it to my friends, plus I found myself noticing "irrationality" operating in my daily life - now I am armed with some strategies on how to constructively deal with it.
Difficulty: Medium
Professor Dan and the amazing Guest Lectures presented complex research findings in ways that were entertaining, apprehensible and immediately applicable in the real-world. They challenged me by helping me question how I think; now I look out into the world with different eyes. I truly loved each moment I spent enaged this course, and even now that it's over, I'm still deriving value from what I've learned here.
Workload: 5-7 hrs
The workload was challenging, relevant, and doable. It was well balanced between lectures, office hours, hangouts, readings, writing assignment, peer assessments, quizzes and final.

This class is one of the best I've taken in my life. Truly brilliant, from the people, user experience and video production. I'm so grateful to Professor Dan, the Guest Lecturers, Aline Grüneisen, all of whom I got to see via video.

Plus, there were other superstars that made this class possible, and while I didn't get to see them via the videos, I am so grateful for all the hard work they put into making this class so awesome: Susan Wunderink, Emily Pinnes, Nick Yam, the elusive Nick Buttrick, and the amazing team at Duke's Fuqua.

What I loved about this course: (1) The weekly lecture videos (from Professor Dan + Guest Lecturers), Google Hangouts, Office Hours, and Discussion Fora between Professor Dan and Aline Grüneisen: All of these elements created a sense of engagement - it felt personal to me. This was a pleasant surprise because I always had my doubts about online learning - I thought it would feel sterile and impersonal. My experience with this course proved me wrong.

(2) This course was super FUN: This course was designed to maximize understanding and retention of the material. From the beginning, students are given the option to be "sponges" or to be more actively engaged via the quizzes, hangouts, written assignment, peer assessment and discussion boards. How deeply the student wants to be engaged in entirely up to him/her.

I also love how the quizzes (both the mini quizzes embedded with the video lectures, as well as the weekly lecture/readings quizzes) and final were designed to test understanding and application of what we learned. These quizzes/final were not difficult so long as students really got the material. Plus, they were entertaining as well.

The production quality of Professor Dan's video lectures was truly excellent. The animations, music, drawings, embedded quizzes -- all these elements came together so seamlessly for a truly enjoyable experience.

Another big driver of what made this class so fun were Professor Dan's jokes -- these "benign violations" (a la Peter McGraw's lecture on what makes things funny) were a refreshing way to segue into each week's topic.

(3) Guest lecturers: while they presented topics we were not quizzed on, I totally enjoyed that they were included purely for the joy of learning. I got turned on to research, blogs and books I had not known about before.

(4) Weekly Google Hangouts + Weekly Office Hours: It was just awesome watching Professor Dan and Aline delve into student questions spawned by the class materials. This really made the class feel very interactive.

Quite possibly the most innovative, engaging, and profound courses I have ever taken! Professor Dan Ariely has the rare ability to make seemingly complex topics within the intersection of psychology & economics extremely simple and intriguing. If I had known about this field of behavioral economics before I entered my undergraduate career, I would have definitely chosen this as my field of study.

Intersting material, but mostly not new if you've got life experience, unreal beyond Western college students such as how the homeless or CEO views a bigger amount of cash. Poorly designed as a world-wide MOOC, such as very limited time for the final ignores that many places have unreliable power or internet. Some staff attitudes seemed to me arrogant. Peer grading failed - very inconsistent grades given for the same essay.
Difficulty: Medium
Lectures were fun, the reading was mostly academic papers, which can be a hard slog to get through.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Lots of academic papers as required readings made this an unusually heavy courseload.

As with many courses using peer grading, this one saw a lot of subjectivity, a lot of graders adding requirements to the rubric and downgrading for failure to meet those added requirements - all openly reported in the forum. Because of the unusually high grade required to get the certificate and the importance of a high peer grade on the single per project, winning a certificate depended on the luck of who you got as graders. The course needs top be redesigned so a single peer graded project is not the make or break decider.

The course was extremely interesting, educational and fun. I think it provided a way for all people to engage the material whatever their background. It's definitely left me keen to explore this fascinating subject further.
Difficulty: Medium
If you put the hours in it was fairly straightforward. The videos were easy to follow though some of the academic papers a little harder.
Workload: 5-7 hrs
The course load was challenging but manageable as long as you kept on top of the work.

Whilst this is only my first course on Coursera I find it hard to believe I'll find one that I enjoy more than this. The material was brilliantly put together, the topics fascinating and well chosen and the range of ways to interact with the team and the other participants made it a very interactive experience. A huge thanks to Dan and the team for all their hard work and making my first Coursera experience such a great one!

Great course, super prepared videos and quizzes, highly motivated staff, leading to great joy taking this course!
Difficulty: Medium
Video lectures and concepts were easy to understand. The reading assignments were often written very scientifically, therefore took some more time and might not have been too easy for everyone, especially for non-native English speakers.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Reading course materials took a lot of time, if done thoroughly, but also helped to really understand the ideas, get more insight in the settings of the experiments und went into further aspects, not treated in the video lectures.

I would recommend this course to everybody, because it contains so many ideas and observations from our real lives and causes us to think about them ourselves to be aware of our often irrational behavior and how to overcome it. This course shows: Learning can be fun!

It is the fourth coursera course I have done, I really enjoyed every one, but this one is by far my number one! You'll learn a lot and in a funny and nice way, and you'll appreciate all the compromise and evident effort and great enthousiasm that professor Ariely puts on his course. I' m very impressed and truly thankfull to him and to his assistant.!

You have to study of course, but it is easy to get contaminated with all the enthousiasm that Mr Ariely puts in his course.

I work as a consultant in negotiation and conflict managemente in my country, Colombia. I'm very enthousiastic about this revolution that you are starting here in coursera. I believe that Coursera must put attention to the way Professor Ariely give his course, he is very good, I learnt a lot from him, not just about irrational decisions but also about his attitude, about his enthousiasm, about his generosity. Thank you so much to COURSERA and to Dan Ariely!

For me the biggest difficulty was to take a look at all of the material on time to be able to answer the Quizzes on the due date. If you are a full-time student that should not be a problem but if you do it for fun or as an extra-learning you have to take it into account. Besides that, once you have seen all the videos and take a quick look into the papers, the questions are rather easy.

If you wanted to read all the compulsory readings you would need a large amount of time per week.

Impressive course. High expectations. Lectures were highly enjoyable and profound and Professor Ariely is one of the best teachers I've ever heard. However, everything was wrong at the end because of the writing assignments.

Before Coursera, have the opportunity to take a course by a prestigious professor was a dream for me. This dream came true, but it became a nightmare.

Initially I planned to take this course in order to get more practice in English. As I got more involved I realized that the topic is actual to me and the course material can be widely inplemented in my everyday life. Quite helpful!

Though I got no statement of accomplishment I am pretty happy with the results. I have already recommended this course to friends and colleagues and I am going to do so futher.

Thank you Dan and all behind the scene.

My only issue with the class related to the required readings and isn't something that can be easily resolved. As these materials came from a wide range of original sources, I found that most of them were not formatted for optimal online/electronic reading (one column, more open line spacing). Most were traditionally formatting for reading in a printed format (i.e. two columns, tight line spacing, etc.) which was not optimal for online reading. I, personally, had a much harder time focusing on the readings that were formatted for print. I also had trouble accessing one of the required readings that needed an online login from the source that did not work after several attempts.

I was very impressed by this course and look forward to referring back to the reading list to explore the topic further. And isn't that what ideally a good educational is about? It amazes me that Dan and company offered this for free. I have paid big money for online classes that couldn't hold a candle to this offering. I also found the guest lecturers quite informing and interesting and will explore their areas of expertise further. It was a pleasure taking this course.

I unfortunately couldn't keep up with the course work because my day job is pretty demanding and interfered. But I still continued listening to the lectures. Superbly organized topics and sterling presentation by Dan and his many rock-star professor friends gave us a slice of insight into some of the cutting-edge research being conducted in the social sciences today. I felt as though I were being afforded an insider's view into a world of great thinkers who were able to translate their ideas into real, applicable solutions to numerous social problems.

The readings were somewhat technical (mostly scientific journals) but readily understood if read carefully. The lectures were beautifully presented, thematically organized, and featured Dan Ariely's brilliant skill for presenting complex material in a simple and readily understood manner.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
The readings took the most time, but they were well worth the investment. The lectures were so enjoyable that they could not be considered as "workload."

Like several of the other people who have commented here, I was a bit disappointed that I really tried hard with all the assignments but didn't quite get a high enough mark to get a certificate. I loved this course, Dan Ariely is awesome and the staff was great too. I've learned a lot, and I enjoyed the whole course, every lectures, speciel guests, even the quizzes and the writing assignment. I waited for this course for months, and it was even better than I expected. I hope there will be a continuation, because I miss the lectures already. :) Big thanks for everyone who brought this together.

Dan made this course so interesting and fun. I was able to think about human behavior in a way that I never have. Some of the topics provide for some interesting table conversation. Thanks again for all the time you spent in making this available on courser and I have already recommended this course to friends of mine. Thanks again and enjoy your day. Julie Ertl

Great teacher, very interesting course with lots of practical examples. Just some of the guest lectures were not that good but I loved all of Dan's lectures.
Difficulty: Easy
The lectures are easy to understand and fun to follow. I didn't do the quizzes and assignments so I can't rate their difficulty.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
The workload for the lectures is about 3 hrs/week. I think that taking the quizzes and writing the assignment would have taken much more time.

I would definitely recommend this course to everybody. There are so many useful and surprising things to learn for life, business, personal development and better understanding of human behavior. I enjoyed all of the teacher's lectures, not all of the guest lectures. I didn't do the assignment because I didn't like it.

Loved this course. Dan Ariely's lecture videos were engaging and instructive. His love of teaching shone through. Weekly quizzes on both lectures and readings were reasonable. Fact that these could be done multiple times added to learning potential. I learned much that will stick; IKEA effect; Decoy effect; Toothbrush theory, etc. The only other MOOC I have taken was the Udacity stat class. This compares well with that one. At center of both = inspirational and passionate person interested in teaching. Many thanks.

The course was well structured, always based in experimental reserach. Readings and lectures complemented each other. Lectures were cleairly explained with some fun examples. All the information is helpful and applicable for daily life.
Difficulty: Medium
What I found a little hard was the long explanation of each experiment and the confirmation or rejection of differents steps of each one of them in the readings. The language made it harder for me, bit it has nothing to do with the course.

Extremely informative and engaging. Ariely is a phenomenal instructor--rare for those who are also productive and brilliant researchers.
Difficulty: Easy
I think that the course material is actually pretty deep and complex material, but Ariely does a great job of putting the content in a context that has some level of intuitive sense to it, making it easier to grasp the intended concepts.
Workload: 3-4 hrs
The readings, by far. They are academic readings--which, incidentally, I enjoy (I'm not a researcher); but the readings are dense and, in a vacuum (that is, without the benefit of Ariely's lectures prior to reading the papers) I think they would have been nearly incomprehensible for the average student. For the record, I don't mind the readings--and don't think that the readings should be removed from the course.

The workload varies mainly due to the required readings of the week. Some weeks the articles might be very long, other week shorter.

Would maybe suggest not to have very long required readings (some were over 40 pages, and there were 5 during a week). That could be too much.

Course information was very interesting, and at times, surprising. The lectures were well done, humorous, and informative. The only complaint is having a peer graded paper.

The course itself was not hard, but there were more quizzes and assignments than previously encountered in other Coursera courses. Peer graded assignment was difficult, from the perspective that it was difficult to be graded fairly.

Though I have zero knowledge in this field (I am a botanist), I find the lectures interesting, engaging and easy to understand. Prof. Dan has used real life examples to put the points across. I go over the video lectures to try understand the concept and jargon and love every minute of it! I enjoy the jokes and hope to use some of them in my own lectures.
Difficulty: Hard
It is hard for me because I am completely new to this field, the academic papers are challenging as I do not understand many of the terms and jargon. Nevertheless, as I go through the lectures and read the literature I find them interesting and informative. The quizzes were not difficult as long as I have done my homework. However the written assignment was more difficult as I was not very sure of how to go about it. Thus I had a rather low grade in the assignment.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Reading the assignment as this takes time to really understand the material.

Though I started as a novice in this course and missed the certificate, I am still extremely happy since I managed to learn so much under the guidance of an eminent professor and his team. Thank you Prof. Dan Ariely! I will now start to read your books.

A very creative course with high quality learning materials, interactive videos (where you can actually ask the professor questions or even talk to him in a video Google Hangout) and well-moderated forums, where fellow course-mates post short summaries, answers to tricky questions and other helpful materials.
Difficulty: Medium
There was a lot of reading assignments (ca. 5 per week), most of the papers were academic articles, which ideally required some experience with that type of literature
Workload: 5-7 hrs
The Writing Assignment was the most time-consuming part.

The rating of the Writing Assignment could be improved. There was a whole "online uprising" in the forums, led by those who did a good job (at least in their minds), but were unfairly rated by fellow group-mates. It was the first time the course took place on the coursera-platform, so there were, indeed, many ways to improve the system. However, the staff response was great, they have took certain steps to change the system even during the course, and I hope they will work on improving it for the next time the course is offered online.

Impressed with the range covered in this introductory class. Readings were (pleasantly) surprisingly challenging.
Difficulty: Medium
For someone working fulltime (as I am) with a busy life (as I have) this was actually difficult to work into my schedule. When I saw the reading list (before I signed up) I knew some things would fall by the wayside for the time I was in the class.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
I spent significant time on the reading material, and I could have spent more time. I found all the lectures enjoyable and it was helpful to schedule this into my calendar.

I thought the professor did a good job of introducing the material and tying the lectures to the reading material. For the most part, the guest lecturers added a nice dimension to the week's topic.

This course might be very useful for young adults who are embarking on a high-powered career, but is useful at my age to think more critically about certain behaviors and decisions I make. I signed up thinking that I would just do a few lectures, just to see what it was all about. I ended up doing the whole course, all of the required readings and many of the additional ones. Material was presented very well, and I didn't have any problems getting the readings from the internet. I could see that a huge amount of work had gone into the design and presentation of the material, and I appreciate that.

I didn't bother with the discussion forum - looked at it a few times, but couldn't see anything worth my time.

Thoroughly enjoyed this course. It set a high bar for any further MOOCs I attempt.

Acadenic papers sometimes difficult to get on internet and usually difficult to incorporate with the fascinating lectures. Course really brought meaning and understanding of human nature and people into my life. Will always remember this course and Professor. Dan.

Liked MOST of the readings but hated some--the more complicated ones. Professor Dan was great. He and his books gave me a roader understanding. And yes, I would highly recommend this course to a friend.

Hope the Coursera store sells a mug or t shirt or pen---or something I can buy as a loved memento.

The readings were the most hard part to go through

The only part I would suggest changing, and overall for coursera, is the interaction on the discussion fora. It is hard to find students with whom to engage in a discussion, since at some point everybody can interject with useless comments. it would be useful to be able to identify students and then create some parallel form of closed groups to maintain the interaction engaging and sustainable. If there would be ways for people to indicate their interest in some discussion or comments, and then find a way to allow students to retrieve and connect to those whose comments were found interesting with some form of chat or interest group. The fora are time consuming and have loads of useless wining. I would also suggest to have for all coursera courses a specific feedback form, such that people are forced to provide constructive feedback instead than just wining forever

While the amount of time invested in this class was much greater than I had anticipated, I feel better about the extra effort as it was well worth it. Fantastic professor, a great team and a presentation that made you wish it would last longer - although you know now that these feelings are more transient hat you think.
Difficulty: Medium
It was a "Beginner`s Guide" and that´s what it really was. It met almost all of my expectations. The quizzes were easier than I thought they would be, but I think they were created as part of the learning. I missed the writing assignment, so I can say nothing about it. Next time - and I hope there will be a next time -I would take that too.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Reading material took quite a time. But it was worth while.

For me it was perfect. I think a lot depends on the personality of the professor, and Dan was absolutely great. Maybe not everyone liked his jokes, bit I enjoyed them very much, because they created an atmosphere that made it fun to follow on. I would recommend this course to a lot of friends.

An incredible amount went into this, and I have to say: BRAVI! The extras, the way the course was designed, everything was innovative and fun. Definitely above the bar, as compared to the other MOOCs I've done. Also, the sheer interactivity of it was amazing: Ariely and his staff were EVERYWHERE, constantly tweaking, joking, interacting. It was amazing.
Difficulty: Medium
I'm an economist, and familiar with Ariely's work. So, conceptually, I would rate this "easy", as most of this was old news. That said, the readings were of a very high level: they were academic papers written in academese, and thus as challenging as my grad school readings. I expect this might be tricky for non-English speakers, and non-economists. Also, the writing assignment (while controversial) was actually a welcome challenge - I had to put real effort in, and I was proud of it!
Workload: 5-7 hrs
The readings definitely took up 3-4 hours a week. Watching the lectures took me about 1-2 hours, and then the quizzes were very short (10 mins). The writing assignment took me several hours, though peer grading was quicker. Overall, decent/medium involvement. I had some breathing room.

Really great course. I loved how many innovative facets it had: from Dan's (TOTALLY CHEEKY) plug of his three books in the beginning (which I fell for... but don't regret buying), to the weekly surveys, to the crowd-sourced essay, to the optional "creative projects". Dan, of course, is a sexy prof working on a very sexy realm of economics. He weaves his personal story into a lot of the lectures, and has fun dropping some very cheesy jokes from time to time. The lectures were thus a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend this course to others (and have).

Please, change the grading. It was very controversial. It is not the same to assess a numerical problem or a computer programme than the kind if writing assignments we were asked to do. Plus, they had a very large impact on the final grade.

It could be the case that doing it almost perfectly in the quizzes and the final exam, you do not get the certificate because a third of the grade was based on a writing assignment assessed by peers. There were many problems with these evaluations because of cultural bias or just because some people that did not follow the instructions,.... and the staff was trying to be nice but did nothing. I will not recommend this course till the grading policy is changed.

Fun, interesting, new, incredible experiments, paradigm changing. Best of all, you can help a lot of people by putting irrationality in practice.
Difficulty: Hard
A lot of reading and not enough time to grasp every details. Saved the optional readings for later.

For a full time working father, this was the most I could give, although 10 hours should be more than enough

I am an attorney and consultant. My practice is in Venezuela. Last year´s presidential elections brought out the fact that voters might have acted "irrationally" at the polls. Emotions were high, incentives of all sorts were offered to voters, and the government seemed to use very clever cheating techniques to prime or manipulate the people´s choice. Regardless of the result what I could not understand was why Venezuelans seemed to be acting so irrationally. Dan Ariely´s course on Irrational Behavior gave me many queues and explanations, especially regarding the teachings of the dishonesty of honest people, self-control (or deception), emotions and how you can prime voters to influence their decision. The knowledge I gained has allowed me to take a new and "irrational behaviour" approach to negotiations and, to be quite honest, it has worked fantastically. To give you an idea, we were able to win a negotiation by offering our counterpart a decoy and using the endowment effect as means to favour our clients position (which was the fairest of all anyways). We have put the "honour code" cleansing at the beginning of the negotiation and it also worked wonders (the meeting went super fast and open). Even the most rational of people tend to be influenced by emotions and, if you understand what Ariely´s proposes in the course you could become an incredible factor in helping people make smart decisions or the right choices. Lectures were fun and interesting and even if you don´t like them, you will end with some jokes that might make your friends pee in their paints in the next party. Articles, specially experiment reports, help give Dan´s lecture all support and explanation of the reason behind irrationality and concentrate the information that we would not otherwise be able to access that fast. Thanks a lot. Time well spent. And the most irrational of all this..... it´s free!!!

Dan Ariely is an intelligent and well-spoken professor. He explains his research and the research in the field in laymen's terms. He makes it fun by telling jokes and having fun, while at the same time having sound research methods. He provides lots of reading material along with recommended reading. There are also two guest lecturers per week with associated Google Hangouts that you can be a part of. This was really a first-class....Class.

Lectures, Reading material and Quizzes were of very good quality
Difficulty: Hard
Learning was medium difficult but earning statement of accomplishment was very difficult as peer assesments were not accurate
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Video Lectures consumed about 3 hours, Reading material about 3 hours, and Quizzes on both about 2-3 hours(as it needed revising material sometimes)

Lectures, Reading Material and quizzes were well designed but a large portion (one-third) of grades was given to Peer assessed assignment in which grading was not as expected by a large portion of students and someone not scoring well on it lost every chance of earning a statement of accomplishment. Dan was very nice in the methods adopted and examples to show the irrationality found in everyone. This course is highly recommended for someone who wants to learn. I have already recommended this course to my friends.

Readings took a long time

For being about irrationality, I think the course is too "rational". Science is nice, but the real applications for working on a scientific environment, in my opinion, always turn out to be a drop in the ocean. You end up having to frame yourself in the little rules of academia and your ideas lose their heart and soul. However, the course is very interesting, I'd take it again but not so seriously.

The lectures were very interesting and well-presented. The readings were quite extensive. The field is the most interesting one in finance. The course was good except for two points - the ability to re-take a quiz up to 15 times makes a bit of a farce of them. Second, 1/3 of the marks were allocated to a written assignment, which is fine, but which was peer-reviewed, which clearly was unfair to many students. I was fine and got the certificate but peer review is quite iffy and allocating 33% to it without any appeals process is imperfect. Otherwise, I really enjoyed returning to a school setting after many years and will look to do more.

I have met Dan Ariely and heard him speak, so I knew that this course would be very entertaining and that the information would be helpful both professionally and personally. After all, everyone can benefit from understanding the factors that influence decision-making. We all face choices and dilemmas constantly, and we all try to influence the decisions of others. In his video lectures Dan decodes complex economic and psychological concepts, reframing them into a narrative that anyone can understand. Some people may choose to only watch the ~ 2 hours of lectures per week, and there is some benefit in that approach. However, full participation in the course is the only way to really absorb the many concepts. The required readings can be time-consuming because they are articles from academic journals, and if you don’t have a background in psych or econ you will need to spend additional time looking up the jargon. (A class Wiki helped somewhat, but I still had to research many terms.) Watching the videos as an introduction to the readings was the best strategy. The quizzes were challenging at first because the phrasing was somewhat awkward, but they were intended to be used as teaching devices rather than testing devices, in fact, you could take each one up to 15 times (questions were varied), and if you retook them you adapted to the odd phrasing. Some people were not pleased that the 800 word writing assignment was peer-graded, but my evaluators were very fair, and I tried to be generous to those I graded. The final exam was easier than I expected, but I prepped for it by retaking the quizzes until I scored 100% or understood my mistakes, and that helped enormously. This course occupied all my free time for 6 weeks, but I enjoyed it so much and learned so much that I blabbered about it to everyone, and now I feel truly disappointed that it is over. I would recommend this course to everyone.

Dan's lectures were very good; some of his guests-not so much. But, overall, I learned a lot and always had a lot to think about. The course was not so full of jargon that it wasn't completely relevant to my every-day life. The quality of all the "extras" that Dan's team put into the experience was really excellent and set the bar very high for my expectations for any other MOOC courses I might take in the future.
Difficulty: Medium
I thot the lectures were so well done in terms of making the material accessible. But the shear mass of reading material (often of a rather technical nature) was often more than I had time to take on--although I appreciated that it was included in the course and quizes--since this is supposed to be a university level course and thus I would expect some challenge somewhere in the process.
Workload: 5-7 hrs
I didn't spend that much time--beyond listening to all the lectures, office visits, reading some of the Readings, and occasionally dipping into the discussions, but I was glad for all that was available and wished I wouldn't have more time for more involvment.

I would absolutely recommend this course--and have! I took it just to see what MOOC's were about, didn't know anything about Dan Ariely and signed on merely because the title of the class cracked me up. Then checked out his books from the library and was hooked. I really liked this class and Dan's perspectives on many of the things discussed. Everyone at my dinner table benefited from the ideas that arose from my listening to his lectures. It was such an enjoyable experience on many levels and I'm thankful for the Coursera concept and that Duke let Dan and his team be part of this grand experiment in global online education.

Extracting information from the original research and learning the test methodology is useful for future behavioral economics researchers. We "beginners" ( "apprentice practitioners" might be better, "sponges" not PC) just want to avoid our own irrationalities and induce profitable behavior in our victims. My advanced hindsight suggests applied behavioral economics and methodology of behavioral economics be two separate courses. Reviews such as Kahneman's Nobel paper, excerpts fro.

Cute course----but not scientifically based as the teacher would like to believe and fairly naive about how the world works . The notion of peer gradings is also suspect--It didnt matter to me as I was just along for the ride., but a lot of students apparently took it very seriosuly---and good for them--and were denied a "certificate" because their peers gave them low grades--not much standardization, it seems.

High end of this range, but enjoyed every minute of it.

This was an excellent course. The lectures were informative and entertaining. I looked forward to the new material every week. The one weakness was the quality of the quizzes. There were quite a few questions that were poorly worded or misleading. The invitation to write final exam questions was a clever way to remind us how difficult it is to write multiple choice questions, so I sympathize, but I hope the quiz questions will get more scrutiny before being used again. A minor issue in an otherwise extraordinary experience. I am hoping for a sequel.

This was my first MOOC, and now I feel spoiled! I suspect the preparation, variety and engaging delivery of Ariely and team is probably a cut above the usual.
Difficulty: Medium
I'm tempted to say Hard, because some of the concepts get tricky to discern correctly. But Ariely makes it sound so easy!
Workload: 8-11 hrs
Since I wanted to have extensive notes for later review, I put in extra time each week condensing the text and slides.

Thanks for the flexibility of allowing different levels of participation. Due to the timing colliding with work commitments, I was not able to do the writing assignment, but I wanted to. I do wish there were some acknowledgement for the course segments I completed (lectures, quizzes, 95 on the final)...maybe a certificate without the coveted Ariely signature? Overall, a great experience. Loved the animations. Thanks for this course!

This was the first time that this course was offered. The lectures were excellent, well structured, and delivered in an engaging way. The readings were well chosen, were generally touched on in the lectures, and added good detail. Some readings were from the scientific literature, and could be challenging.

The assessment was based on quizzes, exams, and a writing assignment. A fair number of students were unhappy with the peer-review grading of the writing assignment. Given the broad range of students coming from many countries, cultures, and background, the grading was indeed inconsistent. In addition, the assignment was very open ended. The course will be improved if the instructor tunes the weighting as well as the nature of the writing assignment.

Almost an A+ however technical problems and in some areas a lack of clarity that resulted in time being used in areas that distracted from course material stopped me giving it an A+. Otherwise Dans presentations and ability to simplify the complex and make learning enjoyable is inspiring and worthy of an A+.

I have so enjoyed this courses application to my life and the world. It has enhanced my understanding of economics and human behavior. This is the first coursera course that I have done and I cant imagine any other course being as enjoyable as this one. I spent alot of time getting my head around the formatting which is understandable as a newcomer. I did as much on the course as time and interest would allow, as my own personal reasons for doing the course was to enjoy learning. This meant I did not do any of the reading, reading tests or complete the final exam, I enjoyed just doing this for pleasure and doing as little and as much as I felt.

Wow. If all my professors were this good with their classes, I don't think I would have ever left college. Dan gives engaging, educational, and informative lectures, with some humor and factoids thrown in for fun. I enjoyed the video lectures much more than the readings---I usually don't enjoy journalistic studies talking about beta's and regression analysis, etc. But overall this was a great class--would take anything offered by Dan Ariely.

I got 100% in the quizzes and 58/62 in the final exam (93,55%). However I only got a 5 in the writing assignment after what I consider an unfair and unlucky evaluation, which did not follow the instructions. So, my final mark was to 83%, not enough to pass the course. I knew that it would be almost impossible to get the certificate after the mark of the writing assignment but, nevertheless, I did the exam. We were discussing about th peer evaluation for more than 10 days and we had hangouts on this problem and nothing has changed. I had a bad feeling when I got the mark that worsen when I realised that we were discussing but things would remain unchanged.

I know that bad luck is a relevant factor of life but in academia always there is the posibility to appeal but not in this course.

Excellent material in the lectures. Most of the required readings were also interesting, although sometimes they seemed a littlle bit disconnected from the main topics. Quizzes were also well planned.
Difficulty: Medium
It was extremely easy to follow the lectures; reading the papers requires a little bit more background knowledge to fully grasp them (especially about experiment statistics)
Workload: 3-4 hrs
The course can be roughly followed with about 3 hours per week, though to take full advantage of all its learning potential it would be better to be able to use up to 4-5 hours (I wasn't)

Great lectures, tremendously motivating teacher. I also liked particularly the concept of "guest lectures" and the diversity of topics they brought. I enjoyed the writing assignment, but that was the most contentious topic among course takers. In mu opinion a more thoroughly specified grading procedure (perhaps with some grade sections less prone to subjectivity) may have lead to a better overall feeling (though, as the course also pointed out, it's difficult to achieve an score that is at the same time objective and universally satisfying)

The final mark mostly relied on the evaluation of a writing assignment done by others students that in many cases did not follow the instructions provided by the staff of the course. There were many copmplains about this issue because people with very good marks on the exams and quizzes (above 95%) were unable to get the statement of accomplishment due to factors that were not completly under their responsability. I was one of them.
Difficulty: Hard
You need a 85% to pass the course and you must be lucky not to get a bad experience with the students that will mark your writing assignment; otherwise it will be impossible to reach that 85%. Please, check the fora of the course at https://class.coursera.org/behavioralecon-001/forum/list?forum_id=134 to see how many people was disappointed

This was the second course I have taken on coursera and far surpassed what I had hoped for with content, engagement, and effort put forward by the teaching staff. One of the best classes I have taken in all of my schooling background.

Course had quizzes(which you could retake as many times as you wanted), a small-medium paper assignment (which was had a general topic that was easy to apply with course material), and a final. Workload: 8-11 hrs
Need time to watch lectures, complete reading assignments, take (and re-take) quizzes, complete a writing assignment, and grade peers. There is also a significant amount of recommended (but optional) reading that most students do not have time for

The course grade is determined through 3 grades: quiz average (lowest 2 dropped), writing assignment (peer-graded), and final exam (2 parts, 60 questions). One must earn an 85% on all parts in order to receive the certificate of accomplishment (most consider this very high). Be forewarned, the certificate is more joking/mocking than serious, as most others are. The peer grade process for this course is more luck than anything.

Overall, the course is very interesting and is likely to be enjoyed by those who has the time/drive to participate.

Lectures were fascinating and entertaining. Reading was relevant and interesting (albeit a bit long at times). In many cases a synthesis of the key ideas could be found in Dan's books, but reading the cases allowed for much greater insight.
Difficulty: Medium

The reading took quite a bit of time. I had had some background in Behavioral Economics (having read quite a bit on the subject) so it took me less time than it would have otherwise (some studies I was very familiar with and was able to skim very quickly.)

This course truly captures the idea that learning can be both fun and informative. The topic of the course is highly pragmatic and (in my opinion) extremely interesting, and Dan and his team did their best to capture and convey that joy in every lecture.

Very well organized and administrated throughout the course. Lectures were terrific as Dan Ariely is very captivating.
Difficulty: Medium
Some of the required reading texts were harder to grasp and get through than others, but in the end as long as you had understood the overall ideas and findings you did well in the course.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
The readings took the most time for me by far, but then the video lectures were pure enjoyment and I wouldn't have minded watching twice as many.

reading research papers and thinking through the concepts took most time for me.

Dan Ariely and his staff have a warm open style which made study refreshing - as it amusingly revealed the mechanisms of our irrational behaviour.

Some of the technical reading really gave the old brain cells a workout!
Workload: 12+ hrs
It seems like the projected hours per week, were a low estimate, not taking into account studying for the final exam, or for people who needed extra time to go over things more until it sunk in. Maybe this could be taken into account somehow in the hours of future MOOCs.

I was very happy to have had the opportunity to take this course. All components were very well-organized and those involved in presenting the course made the material engaging and entertaining. Although I was hopeful going in, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, even though the writing assignment was way too hard and time-consuming, but that's because I've never excelled at such things. Time permitting, I will continue to take coursera classes, but this one will be very hard to beat!

Amazing information from a world class professor.
Difficulty: Medium
This was general information which, if you we're human, you could easily be made aware of by the lectures. But the technical readings were hard and time consuming. And since as humans we easily fall back into the attitudes the course makes us aware of it isn't intuitive. In fact the course is about how our intuitions often point us away from our self-interests.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
The workload is high. It is a six week course but studying for the final takes up a seventh week. The readings, though fascinating, are technical and I found they took a lot of time to read and absorb. The course I took was graded one-third on two quizzes per week (one on the lectures and one on the required readings),one-third on the peer graded writing assignment, and one-third on the final. And it took an 85% to get a certificate.

You could learn a lot and have great fun if you didn't want a certificate but you learn more and deeper going for the certificate and doing serious studying. And this is a field about mistakes humans make and is pertinent to your everyday life. If you want to be a better human, this course could help you see the basic pitfalls and give you a foundation to keeping up with the future experiments in Behavior Economics and the future experiments are sure to reveal more about what it means to be human and when we should not trust what seems natural.

The basic material was reasonable and clear. Prof. Ariely is entertaining and charismatic, but there was arguably too much personal marketing throughout various course elements.
Difficulty: Medium
This would depend on your prior level of education. The basic material was not that hard, and the course developers are to be congratulated on their effors to make things clear to such an eductionally, linguistically and culturally diverse audience.
Workload: 3-4 hrs
For what it was--a non-credit course with little at stake--the load was reasonable.

Student peer review for such a large and diverse group has not been validated and is, in fact, a mess. This is independent from whether students may impulsively vote it up or down on a discussion board. As I understand it, other courses have had trouble with this unsubstantiated metric for groups like this. Why, even for a non-credit course, this should be allowed as a grading metric counting for a third of the assessment escapes me. Also see: http://cft.vanderbilt.edu/2013/01/getting-to-know-coursera-peer-assessments/ . It should be recognized that these criticisms might apply for numerous courses other than Prof. Ariely's. I would recommend the course to a friend, but tell him to be cautious about wasting too much time on quizzes allowing 15 attempts, and to be suspect of any peer-reviewed writing assignment (these may work for more uniform cohorts).

I loved the course and I am very grateful for the experience. I feel emotional bond with prof. Ariely and his associates, they were sooo dear and motivated. One think to be aware of is the high bar for achieving the statement of accomplishmenet, set at 85%. This can be tricky since the peer review of the written assignment carries 1/3 of the grade. Make sure you are doing all the quizzes 100% all the time, so you have buffer for the (most probably) low grade you will get in peer review. All together , an amazing course.

The course was very well thought and very well taught... Although some of the readings can be very especialized and maybe a little tough for a beginners course, unlike Mr. Arielys most popular books, that focuses on an average reader, those lectures are especialized published papers and sometimes hard to read. Some people complained on the peer assesment method for part of the evaluation... I don´t see any alternatives to evaluate 6000 essays in one week, but there is always some room for improvement...

It was fascinating being a lab rat in Dan Ariely's wicked and wonderful labyrinth of learning. Even the structure of the course was designed to push our irrational buttons for better and for worse The very high 85% pass mark was an added incentive for some and a source of discouragement for others especially for the ones who scored 84.5!

It's scary how quickly a symbol of learning (the certificate) became the main event for so many and completely overshadowed all the amazing stuff there was to learn which will linger on long after the piece of pdf paper is forgotten

Will definitely recommend to friends and come back for a second helping as it was so much fun the first time

Assigned reading especially research designs was of interest to me. I made an effort to read the assigned readings for each topic which supported the lectures. Learning the topic's "vocabulary" was necessary for comprehension.

I think Dan Ariely himself is an inspiration to those who have had to meet unexpected challenges in life. The brain is a an unbelievable wonderful mass. We as living beings are miracles considering we start as a single cell and until the end each cell system has to be coordinated with or without the influence of the brain. The end.

Difficulty: Medium
The required reading was probably the most difficult part to grasp ~ trying to make sense of academic papers is sometimes not the easiest thing. However, my fellow classmates were fantastic at sharing their notes and insights, which was very helpful. The lectures reiterated and reinforced the learning from the readings but in a much more down-to-earth type of presentation.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
This couse took me a bit longer than the recommended 7 hours per week due to the required reading section. As well, I spent considerably more time than that completing the essay portion of the course. There was only 1 but it did take me the better part of a weekend to research, compose and edit it.

Ariely is a genius at explaining complex behavioral oddities in simple terms that a general audience can understand. Here, he brings this talent to a MOOC format. I have only two minor complaints: 1. That the course wasn't longer. I was really sad to see the end of the course, and 2. The strange weighting of the scores- 33% quiz, 33% peer-reviewed writing assignment, and 33% exam. I felt it was too much weight placed on the thoughts of a few random peers.

Prof. Dan Ariely appeared to really enjoy the subject and teaching. He and his staff presented the material in an interesting way. Really liked the one hour Office Hour after the week's material. The Office Hour provided a second way to engage the lesson of the previous week. Great production value (quality video) as well. Also liked the final discussion regarding the peer review. The discussion showed that he cared about finding a resolution and students. Again, Dan and his staff put in a lot of effort into the 6 weeks. It showed that they cared. Great class.

dan you should have been upfront about the grading requirements. you are offering an online class from a US institution so the immediate assumption is that 50+% passes. you should have eliminated ambiguity on the group writing and class written assignment. for online learning people are taking time out of their busy lives and schedule to study it is reprehensible that you were not clear at the outset that 85% was required to 'pass' this course. you were more concerned with showing how changing the rules of the game mid-stream would cause a nose dive in the effort and participation of your students

Learnt new concepts in understanding behavior.
Difficulty: Medium
Except for the scientific studies in the PDFs, most course material was easy to comprehend.
Workload: 8-11 hrs
That is a commitment I had made and foresaw. I was able to manage it well.

I am able to relate concepts on irrational behavior to real life. A lot of what is happening around me is suddenly making a lot more sense. I have recommended the program to several of my friends and family. I am able to hold interesting conversations with intelligent people who show a lot more respect for what I think on the subject now that I am able to relate it to what I have learnt.

AN excellent instructional style complemented by some very good video preparation and editing was impressive. The use of weekly "office hours" was particularyl good as was the use of guest lecturers.s

The subject was new to me but learning was made easy by the teaching style and excellent use of videos. The challenge was always to complete the tasks on time and especially to complete the reading lists.

Completing the reading list

This course was fun! An important criteria for attracting students in addition to covering new and challenging ground.

I run a business in Malaysia and wanted to learn more about the subject. While I did not complete the tests on time, when I did do them, I was pleased with my scores. As long as you have conceptual thinking skills, and have read Dan Ariely's books, this course is relatively easy.

This course was BRILLIANT! Thank you Dan for your passion and for making a difference. I appreciated the energy and creativity in the way that the course was delivered. I am enriched by the experience. And, behind Dan, there was a very strong support team. Thank you to each and every one of you. Rest assured that you all have enriched the lives of thousands of students - and we, in turn, will enrich the lives of others with our knowledge.

I think the course was very well presented and easy to understand. The ideas are not only interesting, but applicable in many situations, including your own life. In many ways, it helps one understand oneself, which is always a good thing.

I did think the course was quite easy and was mostly listening to the lectures and little else. Once I'd listened to the lectures, the questions were quite simple and the 2nd quiz, with required reading was mostly looking the quiz over and reading enough of the material to answer those questions.

As an adult educator myself, I found this course was of the highest quality. The learning experience was compelling and totally enjoyable. The course was designed perfectly, balancing various elements to optimise the learning experience. I loved most of all Dan's expertise and his sense of humour and fun. I doubt any other online courses can come close to the experience created by this one. I also appreciated the fact that no team work was involved. Whoop! Whoop!

I think it was Dan's great expertise that made it relatively easy to grasp all these economic concepts in a short space of time.

Workload: 12+ hrs
varied, some weeks 8 some 15, also a lot of peripheral material, hangouts, guest lectures, question answer sessions

After completing 4 coursera courses I can say this is by far the best produced and most focused. Duke and the team did a lot of prep work and bombarded us with opportunities to learn in almost every media possible ( except the traditional face to face ) The 15 tries at each quiz basically dared us to do them over and over to reach the max score resulting in the material being absorbed, the easiest exam I have ever done, and I don't usually do well in exams. Would do any course offered by this team again any day.

material was presented in a way that seemed easy, yet tasks were of medium difficulty

1-2h for videos, 2-3h for reading material and research, 1h for assignments

Most inspirational course ever attended, fun and motivating. Many guest researchers presenting their findings. Very positive atmosphere. Reading material sufficient but not overwhelming. Hardly anything negative to comment on - maybe the decision not to award a certificate of completion for people who failed the 85% level of achievement (it would be worth as a personal gratification of effort and as a nice memorabilium)

Note that I have nothing to show for it! Despite getting every question right on the exam and doing really well on weekly quizzes I have no proof of participation. If you're doing it for your career make sure you spend time on the writing assignment and peer assessment - minimum 7 hrs per week will be required.

Treat the course as you would a TED video or as you would a "real" university course, don't do an I between and spend lots of time but not enough to get a certificate.

But take the course!

The written assignment was the most challenging part, but also the one i learnt the most of.

I recommend the course in the exact format with great enthusiasm, to everyone who wishes to explore and better understand the human (economic) behavior.

Excellent Course, dealing with day-to-day topics, in a fun, easy to understand, interactive and educational way. Prof. Dan Ariely and his staff prepared and delivered the materials with a lot of passion, and did their best to stay connected and make sure every question was answered, whether through office hours, chats or forums. The platform of Coursera was very user-friendly. Join it if you can!
